Clay shooting glossary

← All guides

The terms that appear on the screens, explained in plain language.

The match

Match
The whole event: one date, one location, a set of athletes and of rounds.
Modality
COMPAK, Skeet, Trap or Sporting. It defines the station layout the system suggests when you create the match.
Draft
The match while it is being built. It does not show up for athletes, does not accept results and publishes nothing.
Wizard
The step by step that builds the match: details, rounds, squads, judges and registrations. It can be interrupted and resumed.

The competition

Round
A full turn of the squad through the stations. A match usually has several, and the athlete total is the sum of them.
Station
The shooting spot within the round. Each position has a number of clays.
Clay
Each planned shot. On the screen it is a box you tap: broken becomes X, not broken stays O.
Strip
The sequence of marks of an athlete in the round — their line on the score sheet.
Squad
The group that shoots together, usually five shooters. It is the unit the judge scores in one go.
Firing order
The athlete's place within the squad.
Double
Two clays in the air for the same shooter, who has two shots. Each clay counts on its own: the double ends 0, 1 or 2. See details.
Count-back
Reading the strip backwards to undo a tie on the total. The system does it on its own, with nobody going back to the stand.
Shoot-off
A field tie-break, when not even the count-back settles it: the tied athletes go back to the stand, usually for 5 doubles. It does not add to the score — it only decides the place.
Sudden death
The continuation of the shoot-off when the tie holds: one double at a time, and the first to miss loses.

The people

Judge (scorer)
Whoever marks the clays and signs the round. Signs in with the club code, username and password.
Front desk / staff
Whoever organises: builds the match, handles registrations and payments, publishes the results.
Class
The level or group the athlete competes in, according to the club catalogue.
Category
Another cut of the standings (for example, by age or by a club management group).

Signature and integrity

PIN
The athlete's short password in the match. It is what they use to accept the result of their round — the signature on the sheet.
Closing the round
The judge signs after everyone has checked. From then on the round becomes a result and enters the scoreboard.
Station-by-station acceptance
The mode where the athlete confirms each station as it ends, instead of signing everything at the end.
No-PIN exception
Release from the front desk to close the round without the athlete signature, recorded with whoever authorised it.
Reopen
Bringing a signed round back to editing, stating reason and detail. It creates a new version and keeps the previous one.
Warning
Disciplinary record (safety, conduct, delay, equipment) tied to the station. It does not change the scoreboard.
History
The trail of what happened in the match: who changed what, when and why.

Public

Match page
Public address with the details, the squad grid and the released links.
Big screen
Big-font version of the scoreboard that refreshes on its own — for the club TV.
Receipt
Registration document, ready to print, with the athlete, club and match details.
Score sheet
The traditional printed sheet, by round and squad, clay by clay.

This guide covers clay shooting matches (COMPAK, Skeet, Trap and Sporting).
